RESPONSIBLE ENCOURAGING SPORTING POSITIVE ENJOYABLE CONSIDERATE TOLERANT Soccer has the same problem and it is perhaps a sign of the times, we all need to remind ourselves why children play sport, they want to enjoy it! Without the win at all costs mentality that is blighting our game and putting young players under pressure. If you are a Junior Coach remember your responsibilites, you should be trying to improve your players and as a result of that your team and its performances will improve, do not dispute decisions set an example to the players, as a spectator or Parent encourage your team and praise good play from both teams. Children are not highly paid highly trained professionals, they simply want to learn the game and above all enjoy playing, it is impossible to do either when Adults on the touchline are shouting abuse and displaying aggressive behaviour, our demise at International sport is down to too much pressure to win, win, win at Junior level. Allow the players to practice their skills and make the odd mistake they will be better for it and who knows we might one day have players with the skills to match the best at top level. Rugby League is a very competetive and physical game, when played properly there is no finer sport in the world, however in recent times at Junior level the game is being spoiled by spectators and sometimes coaches becoming too emotional and verbally abusing Officials and the young players.Enjoy your Rugby League

The Mentoring And Development (MAD) scheme is based on professional players becoming personally involved with junior player development at their local clubs. The aim is to expand the thinking and stimulus of our young players in an environment that hopefully will heighten their awareness through the involvement of professional players.
The MAD scheme will incorporate individual positional coaching by professionals who play in a particular position the majority of the time whose knowledge of that position can be passed on to the junior players. For example Kane Epati may coach a session specifically on playing as a winger; Pat Walker may take a session focusing on kicking etc.
Dewsbury Rams coach Warren Jowitt commented: “It’s a really good idea for professional clubs to link up with amateur clubs outside of the professional environment as that’s where the future of the sport lies. Having our players at Dewsbury mentoring the Shaw Cross youngsters gives us the chance to watch the kids grow and develop into mature rugby league players. It’s also very good for the juniors to have the players they aspire to be like, helping them develop their skills and giving them advice on how they play. For the game to go forward it is really important that all clubs have strong links with their local junior teams for the professional game to continue to grow.”
Shaw Cross Under 9’s & Kirklees Service Area coach James Stephenson, the creator of the idea, said: “Being a junior rugby league coach I have been pondering for the last 12 months on how to improve on rugby league skills additional to the normal UKCC and RFL coaching program. After some time studying the game at all levels I thought of a mentoring and development scheme that could be coached by professional players themselves. I approached my local club Dewsbury Rams and presented the idea and was exited how receptive and positive the club was, and then was born the MAD Scheme. The involvement of professionals will give junior players a different perspective of coaching and gives them a break from standard training sessions which can sometimes become slightly monotonous for young players.”
Hopefully, over time, the scheme can be developed and expanded for other junior teams to be included and other professional teams will take on the commitment, like Dewsbury Rams, to expand the development of grass roots rugby league throughout the country.
BARLA International Manager & Shaw Cross Director of Coaching Michael Turner stated “For the game to go forward it is essential that new strategies are developed, and with great initiatives such as the new MAD scheme put into action will allow our young players to collate new skills and develop key techniques that will become evident when the young players progress. To be mentored by the Dewsbury Rams players who have shown through their own hard work and commitment that local lads can become prime Rugby League players can only be encouraging and a real kick start to their development”.
Sky Sports - Mike "Stevo" Stephenson said "This is a cracking scheme, and is a smart move to develop the skills of the young Sharks with top-class players, lets hope that all other clubs take note"
