“Olpherts in action for Shaw Cross”
Former Shaw Cross Sharks' star Derrell Olpherts has been unveiled as Salford Red Devils' latest signing - with his contract starting at the beginning of 2018.
The 24-year-old has taken the road less travelled by on his journey to Super League after moving from the second-tier of the amateur game to League One before his anticipated jump to the top flight next year.
Olpherts left Shaw Cross in 2014 after winning player of the year and was signed by League 1 outfit Hemel Stags.
The promising utility back then made the switch to the North East to join Newcastle Thunder in 2016, scoring 13 tries in 16 appearances.
Olpherts has been a regular feature for Newcastle this year and has scored 14 tries in 15 games.
Salford head coach Ian Watson is excited to have the former Shark on board for next season.
"We’re really excited to have captured his signature," said Watson.
"There were a few other big Super League Clubs trying to sign him so we’re delighted that he’s decided that his future is here.
"He is a strong powerful runner who can play in the outside backs, and he backs this part of his game up with his defence.
"He’s got a great try scoring record and deserves the chance to have a crack in Super League, he’s got huge potential.”
