We welcomed Leigh Miners U16 girls today for our first friendly of the season.
Our girls have trained hard over the close season and were itching to get a game.
Shaw Cross had the majority of possession in the first 10 minutes but could not break down Miners defence despite repeated attempts. Eventually, Lydia Fawkes intercepted a Miners pass and made a great run until she was brought down where Lauren Mowatt picked the loose ball up and ran over the line for the first score of the match. Courtney Marsh converted the kick well.
A few minutes later Lauren ran a good 40 yards to score her second try of the match.
On 2o minutes Courtney Marsh score the 3rd try for the Sharks with a jinking run putting the ball down between the posts and also kicking the conversion.
Miners had their first real chance from the following kick off when a wicked bounce put the ball back into their hands but Sharks defended well and the first half ended
16-0 to the Sharks
Miners kicked off at the start of the 2nd half and soon Lauren Mowatt again found the ball in her hands and sprinted a good 40 yards , placing the ball calmly between the posts. Courtney again converted.
Miners were having more possession now and despite great defence from Sharks they pulled 6 points back with a try from their No 12 Emily Darnes. This was converted by a good kick from Nieve O’Connor to bring the score to 22-6
Lauren Mowatt scored her 4th try of the match when she intercepted a Miners pass and this time ran 55 yards to place the ball between the posts yet again!!
And yet again Courtney Marsh kicked the conversion
Miners applied pressure again after this and they scored just before ful time with a try from Emily Darnes and a conversion again from Nieve O’Connel
Final result: Sharks 28 Miners 12
