Ryan Glynn a star player at Shaw Cross Sharks suffered a serious spinal injury on Saturday 9th March 2013. Shaw Cross had travelled to Elland ARLFC to play round two of the National Conference League Division 2 programme. With 11 minutes to go and the Sharks leading by 10 points to 2 Ryan was tackled and seriously injured. Ryan is currently admitted to the spinal injury unit in Sheffield. Ryan has had two major operations today and has had screws fixed into his dislodged vertebrae’s. Further updates will follow.
On behalf of Ryan’s family and Shaw Cross Sharks I want to put on record our thanks to the staff at Elland ARLFC, the Ambulance service and the staff at hospital in Sheffield. Right from the point of injury Ryan was in very capable hands.
We at Shaw Cross have been inundated with calls and messages offering help. We intend to auction / raffle rugby league memorabilia, charity matches have been arranged – the response has come from as far as Australia to Kent to Peterlee. I have personally been humbled and emotionally drained at how the Rugby League community at all levels has shown its support.

**Update Added 19:38 12/03/2013**
Ryan's operations went well and he is currently in recovery with plates and bolts in his spine. He remains in good spirits despite still been in pain and has had visits from his team mates today. Ryan will now get the support and help to aid his long road to recovery. More updates will follow in due course. Once again we would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their kindness and donations in support of Ryan.
**Update Added 17:43 13/03/2103**
Scan results have come back clear, but there is swelling to the spinal cord so they won't be able to see if there is any damage until this reduces, nothing has moved and Ryan's neck remains straight.
**Update Added 07:43 15/03/2013**
Ryan is still in Sheffield Spinal Unit recovering from the operations and it is too early to tell anything just yet as the swelling is still going down. They are looking at moving him to Huddersfield whilst he continues the slow recovery process. Once again Ryan is in the best hands possible and has his family with him for support. There will be ups and downs along the way but Ryan as always is a tough cookie and remains positive.
**Update Added 17:43 18/03/2013**
Ryan is currently at the spinal unit at Sheffield. I am told this is one of the best facilities in the country.
Ryan has a small artery in his neck which is slighlty blocked caused by the trauma of injury and the eight hour operation. He is on medication to combat this and at this time has to remain lying down at all times.
There will be many ups and downs along the way and despite this setback he is in good spirits and takes great comfort from the visitors / messages etc.
Lets crank the momentum up everyone - get on twitter #ForGynny
We are currently in the process of organising a massive fundraising event - a boxing and auction night. Further details to follow.
I am still inundated with calls and messages and items are arriving every day for our auction.
**Update Added 23:41 21/03/2013**
A new website has been set up www.ryanglynn.co.uk to help with donations and fundraising. Ryan is still in hospital with no further update from Monday's condition.
**Update Added 12:54 22/03/2013**
Firstly, Ryan would like to thank all the lads for the visits and everyone from outside the club for their continued support. The good news is that he has partial movement in his left thigh and can with a struggle lift it off the bed. No movement as yet with the left arm. They could possibly be trying to get him up into a chair as early as the beginning of next week. Ryan is still very positive and upbeat as we all are and although it's going to be a long hard road, we are optimistic of a full recovery.
**Update Added 19:05 05/04/2013**
Ryan is still in hospital and undergoing extensive Physio. He is sat up and has a wheel chair. He is having electrode treatment on his left forearm and under treatment there is movement in his fingers.
Ryan could possibly be allowed out of hospital for the day in the near future but will have to return to continue his long recovery
Things are slowly moving in the right direction. He will eventually have to learn to walk again but with Physio and Ryan's determination we are all hoping this will happen
**Update Added 20:51 17/04/2013**
Ryan has been out of hospital for the odd days but will remain in the current hospital for another four weeks. He is still staying strong and has the support of everyone around him in order to hopefully make a full recovery one day.
We thank you for the support and please continue to follow Ryan's progress via his website. The Sharks website will have updates but for now the updates have slowed down as it is a long road to recovery. Thanks again.
