Why didn't the Bulls stop this stupid saga long ago?

BULLS ADMIT TO WRONG DOING

Bradford's former Leeds star Iestyn Harris

Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos have settled their dispute over the signing of Iestyn Harris.

The Bulls apologised and agreed to pay compensation as well as Leeds's costs, averting a further High Court trial.

Leeds won an initial court battle in 2005, with a judge ruling they had first refusal to sign Harris when he returned from rugby union in 2004.

A further trial was expected in 2009, with Leeds allegedly claiming £3.2m in compensation from the Bulls.

A Bradford statement on Wednesday said: "Bradford Bulls now accept that, although when they signed Mr Harris they believed that they were free to sign him and acted in good faith in doing so, they now appreciate that in fact Mr Harris was committed to sign for Leeds Rhinos at the time, and apologise to Leeds Rhinos for doing so."

Former Leeds skipper Harris signed for the Bulls in 2004 after leaving the Cardiff rugby union team.In July 2005 a High Court judge found Harris guilty of failing to honour a clause in his contract which gave the Rhinos first call on his services as a league player.

Leeds were claiming the £3.2m pay-out in lieu of a transfer fee as well as lost merchandise potential and ticket sales that Harris's return could have provided. Bulls chairman Peter Hood said in January that Bradford could go bankrupt if Leeds won their claim.

But the Bulls statement added: "Bradford Bulls also wish to make it clear that the comments made by their Chairman, Peter Hood, reported in the press at the end of January 2008 were not intended to give the impression that Leeds Rhinos claims against Harris and Bradford Bulls were motivated by anything other than the protection of Leeds Rhinos interests."

Watch out for KR hitting the top 6

KR SNATCH DOBSON OFF FC

Michael Dobson

Hull KR have completed the signing of Australian scrum-half Michael Dobson from NRL side Canberra Raiders.

The 21-year-old, who has previous Super League experience from spells with Wigan and Catalans Dragons, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal. Dobson will replace the club's former captain and scrum-half James Webster on their overseas quota.

Webster was removed after dislocating his shoulder, an injury which would have ruled him out of the whole season. Dobson will fly into the country in the next couple of weeks after being freed by the Raiders. Rovers coach Justin Morgan told BBC Radio Humberside he is delighted with his new signing.

"I'm very pleased because he's a highly sought after player. It's a great reflection on the club that he chose us over other clubs."

But Morgan dismissed speculation that they have paid over the odds to get the player to Craven Park. "There were a couple of other clubs in for him and in terms of the package, it was all a much of a muchness," he said. "I don't want people to believe we've splashed the cash. It certainly wasn't that way at all."

And Morgan says Dobson is his kind of scrum-half. "He does take on the line and he's got some deceptive speed," he said. "He's got a good change of speed and his support game is very good."He's a fantastic kicker and a great talker and he'll rally his forwards around the park when he gets here and he'll certainly fit into our ethos."

Dobson will have to wait to make his Robins debut and will not be eligible to play in this Sunday's fifth round Challenge Cup tie against Huddersfield. The club will also have to sort out his work permit before he will be able to pull on a Red and White jersey for the first time. "He's not registered in time for the cup game but he will be able to play in the next round if we win through because there's a new registration date," Morgan explained.

"The game after against Huddersfield (in the Super League) might be a bit tight but I think the week after that would be a huge possibility against Harlequins."

Re-naming it doesn't make it better unfortunately

 SAINTS RE-NAME STADIUM

St Helens

St Helens have announced that they will be renaming their Knowsley Road ground as part of a sponsorship deal.

The stadium, which has been the club's home since 1890, will now be known as The GPW Recruitment Stadium until the end of the 2010 season.

Saints' chief executive Tony Colquitt said: "GPW have been long time supporters of the Saints.

"We're sure this partnership will have benefits for both organisations to go from strength to strength."

St Helens have submitted plans to build an 18,000-capacity stadium on a derelict 46-acre site on the edge of the town centre to the local council.

Subject to gaining the necessary permissions, work is scheduled to begin on building the stadium this year with the first game set to be played there in 2010.

Back to the track for Dwainy boy

DWAIN FELT THE PAIN TOO MUCH

Dwain Chambers

Castleford have decided against offering sprinter Dwain Chambers a contract after the end of his trial.

Chambers tried his hand at rugby league after being frozen out of athletics following a two-year drugs ban. But the 30-year-old, who had never played the sport before, struggled to cope with the stamina required.

"He would need a significant amount of additional time to prove whether he would be capable of making the grade," read an official Castleford statement. "Time is something we don't have, but we wish him the best for the future."

The club said they had concluded the trial with "some reluctance". Chambers' future is unclear, but Castleford's decision may force him to fight the British Olympic Association's ban on him competing in Beijing later this year.

A BOA by-law prevents athletes found guilty of serious drugs offences from ever appearing at the Olympics, even after they have served their bans. But Chambers may be able to challenge the BOA's by-law 25 in court in an effort to make the Great Britain team.

We know what you really meant Brian

BIG MAC CLARIFIES WHAT HE MEANT

Brian McDermott

Harlequins coach Brian McDermott has clarified his comments after their 18-16 defeat to Catalans Dragons. An emotional McDermott caused a stir after seeing his side throw away a 10-point lead at the Millennium Stadium.

After the game he said: "I am asking some questions whether the whole bit of being in London works." But on Tuesday McDermott added: "At no stage did I question whether London works. I questioned whether we were

getting it right." Tries from Julien Touxagas and Justin Murphy gave Catalans a dramatic late win over Harlequins as part of the Millennium Magic weekend.

It came just a week after Quins had seen a 14-point advantage overturned at Wakefield and brought a fiery response from the coach, who took over the club two years ago. "In hindsight, I shouldn't have gone into the press conference," added McDermott.

"As a coach, when I see my team lose two games in a row in the dying minutes, then I start to ask questions about what we are doing here in London. By that I mean in terms of our preparation, how we train, when we train, how we travel to games and so on. "There is certainly no question about whether or not rugby league will work in London. Rugby league does work in London and is making real progress.

RFL go from one extreme to... the other!

BONKERS BINGO!

A new television game show, called BingoLotto, will be winging its way to your screens in February 2008. The show, fronted by comedian and I’m A Celebrity! winner Joe Pasquale and Dancing on Ice star Suzanne Shaw, is an interactive game in which viewers can play along in real time. BingoLotto will allow viewers to join in the fun from home, playing a variety of games and experiencing moments of real drama and emotion.

BingoLotto has been tried and tested in Sweden where it has raised just under £1 billion for charities and sports organisations. At least 20% from each ticket that is sold here in the U.K will be distributed to sport and recreational projects nationwide to support a host of good causes.

A mixture of charities and good causes will be supported by BingoLotto and these will be split between mainstream and sports related causes, mirroring the format in Sweden. BingoLotto is working closely with CCPR (Central Council of Physical Recreation), which is the representative body for national sport and recreation organisations in the UK, and will identify the sporting bodies to receive support from the game. Beneficiaries will range from football and folkdance through to rounders and rugby.

The game is designed for all-round family fun (although players must be 16 or over) and players who obtain a winning Game card have the chance to call the show and be randomly selected to play for a variety of prizes, including sensational jackpot giveaways, new cars and holidays around the world.

BingoLotto, which is a one hour show, will be broadcast on digital TV channels Virgin1 and Challenge every Friday night between 7 and 8pm. Players can purchase tickets from outlets displaying the BingoLotto sign around the country, which will give them the chance to play three rounds of bingo and other games during the TV show from their own homes, with 1 in 9.5 Game cards being winners!

Furthermore, the funding that will be received will be spent on new and enhanced activity programmes, from grass roots to special projects, like infrastructure improvement and capacity building. BingoLotto will also provide a valuable profile to a wide range of sports and activities as they will be featured on the weekly show and also on the BingoLotto website.

All in all, BingoLotto has the potential to be a massive success so go on, give BingoLotto a TRY! in 2008.
